On the eve of the Great War (1913), Golden Dawn member, Freemason, Rosicrucian & author of 'A New Encyclopaedia of Freemasonry', Arthur Edward Waite published a reprint of a book entitled 'The Book of Ceremonial Magic'. Reputed internet site 'sacred texts' calls Waite's work, 'an unparalleled look at the details of ceremonial magic.' Originally written in 1898, Waite's book details the infamous Medieval 'Grimoires', a selection of manuscripts containing the procedures for sprit invocation, angel & demon including the legendary 'Lesser Key' & 'Key of Solomon the King'. Whilst I've only perused the contents of the book, I have read Chapter XI, 'The Mysteries of Infernal Evocation According to the Grand Grimoire'. Having read many of the works of Waite's fellow Golden Dawn member Aleister Crowley, I'm fairly familiar with the concepts & purposes of Magic & what it involves as relayed in the books themselves published by the Magician, however, I can only guess at the true meaning of the heavy symbology being portrayed in the rituals, naturally they would never reveal the exact details of their machinations, otherwise all hell would break loose…I presume. That said, what I would like to explore here is the perhaps the true meaning behind works like The Grimoires & other various texts purporting to explain the process of summoning members of the choir of heaven & hell, at least one explanation anyhow. I cannot explain supernatural phenomena although if I had to throw my hat into the ring about it,
I'd venture the opinion that angels are ghosts.
Some may accuse me of an obsession with Satanism, perhaps it's true, however I personally can't see how the God of the Bible would create an entity along the lines of that which is being used by certain religious groups, known to be created & led by members of the Mystery Schools to cow it's congregations, I believe the obsession lies with them not me. If I do have an obsession with Satanism it's to find the truth behind it all because I've found that it permeates all spheres of the arts & much of the sciences. I mention in my Bible blog that our present-day idea of the Devil comes from the Mysteries themselves, they're behind all the propaganda we hear about & have been for centuries, he hardly features at all in the Old Testament which is where we first hear of him in a Judea-Christian sense. But perhaps most importantly, there's been a great deal of mockery & retribution involved with this/these Alchemical/Hermetic symbols (sometimes Lucifer & Satan are the one & the same),
for that is what they are, random statues of this demon may be found lurking in many of the Medieval Cathedrals including Notre Dame & Rosslyn in Scotland, built by the Mystery Schools themselves,
this needs to be borne in mind when we do research on the subject.
Between them, various members of the Golden Dawn (founded 1888) published a series of works on magic, black & white, drawing heavily on the ancient art/science of the Qabbala. From what I'm able to discern thus far, magic is based on astrology primarily, the effects of the celestial bodies on the earth, the prediction of recurrences in the cosmos etc (numerology/mathematics/geometry), it's subsequent effects on nature & the constitution of man, his psychology, philosophy & so on. Once the 'keys' to or the formulas ( 7 - 7 in particular) of the forces of nature are in the possession of man, he can manipulate them to his 'Will' & of course predict it's outcome, Qabbala deals with all these subjects & more. These practices have been refined & combined since the misty dawn of civilisation by the wily to produce a religion thats with us to this day, operating under many different names, but co-existing under the umbrella of Freemasonry which acts as the visible outer protection for what Christians call, 'Mystery Babylon'. It's the religion to which the Israelites of the Bible would fall into on occasion, they are known to themselves as the 'Philosophers of Fire' & have been at war with the adherents of the God of the Bible seemingly forever, although now it's the Magi who hold the reigns of power on earth, if indeed they ever relinquished them.
The act of demon or spirit invocation/evocation appears to have been an issue for the writers of the Bible, as it's mentioned in both the Old & New Testament, both Solomon & St Paul are attested to having experienced demons in some way or another, Jesus conducted multiple exorcisms & also had his legendary run-in with the Devil himself in the desert, thus it could be said that the practice is 1000's of years old. Were it not for the fact that it's referenced in the Bible, & that the names of God & Jesus are recited in the infernal invocations, I'd dismiss any conjuration of a demon called Satan or Lucifer as mere symbology for a complex mystical discipline. We simply do not know in what form these demons appear to the sorcerer, Waite says they should be asked to materialise in human form, whilst people like Manly Hall emphasise that they are the demons within man, however, they are the masters of deception & their word cannot be trusted on any subject unless it can be proven. So there's a great mystery here as to what really happens when the magician invokes a spirit, whats not in doubt is it's blasphemy according to the teachings in the Bible which fervently denounces such practices, therefore we're left with another situation which requires a matter of faith, do they or don't they? I think it makes sense though to leave any speculation on this point to the divine emergencies & see if we can make our point by use of more earthy resources.
Certainly the same practices can be traced by the same people from Biblical times. The writings of St Paul are considered to be Gnostic by many authors including Manly Hall & the Gnostics were & are famous for invoking spirits as are the Qabbalists;
'In the World of Assiah are to be found the demons & tempters. These are likewise reflections of the ten great globes of Atziluth, but because of the distortion of the images resulting from the base substances of the World of Assiah upon which they are reflected, they become evil creatures, called shells by the Qabbalists. There are ten hierarchies of these demons to correlate with the ten hierarchies of good spirits composing the Yetziratic World. There are also ten Archdemons, corresponding to the ten Archangels of Briah. The black magicians use these inverted spirits in their efforts to attain their nefarious ends, but in time the demon destroys those who bind themselves to it. The ten orders of demons & the ten Archdemons of the World of Assiah are as follows:
D 1, the evil Crown; the hierarchy is called Thaumiel, the doubles of God, the Two-headed; the Archdemons are Satan & Moloch.
From D 1 came D 2, the evil Wisdom; the hierarchy is called Chaigidiel, those who obstruct; the Archdemon is Adam Belial.
From D 2 came D 3, the evil Understanding; the hierarchy is called Satharial, the concealment of God, the Archdemon is Lucifuge…..'

Neither the Gnostics nor the Qabbalists were expunged when the Catholic Church (possessing both the rituals & teachings of Mystery Babylon & Christianity) assumed power in Europe as they were primarily based in the Middle East & thus escaped any major persecution, this could have been the real reason for the Crusades as the Knights Templar 'brought back' with them much 'wisdom' from the secret societies operating there including the Sufi's, Dervishes, Assassins etc. During the 'Dark Ages' & prior to the Crusades, Mystery Babylon proper had crept into Europe from the Middle East through the Moors in Spain the Bogomils, Albgensians & the Cathars who eventually settled in great numbers in France especially & this is from where the Crusades were launched, as all the protagonists of that diabolical scheme were French. The Templars brought back with them from the Middle East a deity known as 'Baphomet' & it's the image of this demon that features on the cover of Waite's 1913 book (see image above left). The practices of the Templars were/are regarded as Satanic in Anton Lavey's 'Satanic Bible' (1966); 'The symbol of Baphomet was used by the Knights Templar to represent Satan'. Carrying on down history we find Satan being depicted in literature, from Dante, to Marlowe's Faust, John Dee's 'Enochian Keys', in the Rosicrucian Manifesto's as 'Virgo Lucifera', Milton's 'Paradise Lost', William Blake, Goethe's 'Faust' to the 19th Cen writings of Eliphas Levi & Albert Pike down to the turn of the 20th Cen where 'Satanism' became openly visible to the public as an operative religious movement. It was at this time that Golden Dawn members began overtly espousing Satanic beliefs & publishing Satanic literature.
The regular appearance of Satan in literature from Dante on was no accident according to Manly Hall, who stated they were 'part of a programme'. Broadly speaking, in the Mysteries, magic comes under the term 'Hermeticism' (see Baigent & Leigh 'The Elixir & The Stone' 1997). 'Hermes, the God of Wisdom, called also Thoth, Tat, Seth, Set, & Satan.' (Madame Blavatsky). Hermes was derived from the Egyptian god Thoth by the Greeks & apart from wisdom, was considered the patron of writing, magic, & the moon. Hermes was/is the patron of the Rosicrucians (see Manly Hall 'Hermetic Symbols of Alchemy' lecture). So all this has to be borne in mind when we hear the accusation that the Grimoires were for the most part Medieval forgeries, for sure they do not have an author, however if they surfaced in the Middle Ages then it makes sense to place the authorship in that period, my guess would be someone along the lines of the Alchemist Roger Bacon, or perhaps the highly revered Raymond Lully. Neither can it be coincidence that the Qabbala surfaced in literal form in Europe & Dante (a member of the Mystery Schools) set to work writing his classic depictions of Heaven, Hell & Purgatory, immediately after the Knights Templar were outlawed in Christendom, nor is it by chance that much of Dante's work is of a Qabbalistic bent.

Sure enough, when we place all the pieces together, a familiar pattern begins to emerge, the only difference between the Grimoires & the other non-fiction literary works of the Mysteries being the dialogue or the 'pact' made, 'in blood' between the magician (Karcist) & the demon, all the other symbols involved in the ritual are familiar instruments, signs & phrases, the triangle, cross etc. Other startling objects used in the rite of Lucifuge include; a goat sacrificed to Jehovah then skinned & burned, consecrated charcoal is used in the 'Holocaust'….'Vouchsafe, O great ADONAY, to receive them as an acceptable holocaust.' (Infernal Invocation). But perhaps most puzzling is the employment of four nails taken from the coffin of a dead child…..how does one acquire them?? '….all these must be carried to the place chosen for the great work, where everything hereinafter laid down must be scrupulously performed & the dread Kabalistic circle must be described in an accurate manner.' (ibid).
When the magic circle has been prepared, Lucifer is summoned by the Karcist, 'Emperor Lucifer, Master & Prince of Rebellious Spirits, I adjure thee….', however, it's Lucifer's prime minister Lucifuge Rofocale who appears in his stead, apparently this is normal practice & acceptable to the Karcist, then the bargaining takes place. After a series of exchanges, the conditions of the pact are drawn up, ending; '…on condition that thou deepest the secret for ever inviolable, art charitable to the poor & dost give me a gold or silver coin on the first day of every month. If thou failest, thou art mine everlastingly.' To which the Karcist replies, 'I agree to thy conditions'. Thereupon the spirit is in the service of the magician, who incidentally assumes the name of 'Solomon' during the invocation. The details of the conjuration are alarmingly realistic, the Karcist is warned to withstand the wiles of other demonic spirits sent by the Emperor Lucifer to ensnare him or by Lucfuge's trickery of wording during the bargaining designed to trap the magician into a literally soul destroying signature.
In any event, what I'd like to draw attention to is the amount devices, slogans, symbols etc used in this invocation of Lucifer that are known, used & are in fact part of the furniture of the modern Mystery Schools, Freemasonry in particular. The name 'Carbonari', the secret society who gave rise to the Mafia means 'charcoal burners'. 'Not exclusively a Masonic institution, goat riding or making candidates “ride the goat” has been an aspect of hazing fueled initiation meant to scare & embarrass neophytes & initiates joining the institution' (Mackey - ibid). Masons of course are obliged to participate in 'charitable' works, indeed they are probably behind most if not all work of this kind. We could go on associating the symbols of the invocation with Freemasonry but I'd like to focus on one device of the ritual in particular & that is the 'stone', here called 'Ematille'.
These three images are taken from a book entitled; 'The Gnostic & Esoteric Mysteries of Freemasonry, Lucifer & the Great Work' (GMFL & GW), excerpts from the writings of Eliphas Levi, Arnoldo Krumm-Heller & Samael Aun Weor, all prominent Rosicrucians of the 19th & 20th centuries. The 'blood' stone used in the infernal Invocation by the Karcist was for protection against evil, from the aforementioned book we read; '[The] Brute [Stone]: when it is not carved, the Devil (or the reflection of the Logos in us) [is] unworked, unpolished, [it is] BLACK AS COAL, it is SATAN, in his darkest & most tenebrous aspect. But it is not Anthropomorphic Satan, like that which the clergy want us to see; no, it is our [own very] own particular Satan. But when we have already achieved the dissolution of the Ego, when we have reduced it to ashes, then that Brute Stone has been transformed into the PERFECT CUBIC STONE; then Satan is already Lucifer, the "MAKER OF LIGHT". (Parentheses & brackets theirs).
It seems to me that if the symbology of the Grand Invocation & the process whereby the Initiate becomes illumined in the modern Mysteries are almost identical, then what we're reading in the Medieval Grimoires could just be ancient-old veiled jargon for the processes of initiation within the Mystery Schools, 'When the Mason learns that the key to the warrior on the block is the proper application of the dynamo of living power, he has learned the mystery of his craft. The seething energies of Lucifer are in his hands & before he may step onwards & upwards he must prove his ability to properly apply (this) energy.' - Manly Hall.
Albert Pike's classic work on the rituals of Freemasonry, Morals & Dogma (1872) contain many plagiarised verses from Eliphas Levi's 'Magic, A History Of It's Rituals & Mysteries' (1856), perhaps this passage being the most renown; 'Lucifer! Light-Bearer-how strange a name, attributed to the spirit of darkness! ' (Levi). Another is the somewhat more cryptic, 'They represented this force, which presides over the physical generation, under the mythological figure of the horned god Pan; the goat of the sabbath comes from here, the brother of the ancient serpent, & the light-bearer or phosphorus whom the poets have made into the Lucifer of legends….' (Levi). At the advent of Christianity, the Mystery Schools are said to have announced, 'Great Pan is dead', Plutarch places the announcement during the reign of Tiberius (14–37 AD), i.e. during the life of Jesus…..
Going further back in time, the Book of Job has God & Satan bargaining over the soul of the virtuous Job, who Satan says will renounce his loyalty to God if placed under severe testing, of course Job never does & God wins the bet so to speak but it's this story that is the inspiration of the Faust legend & most if not all subsequent so-called pacts with the Devil. Again from the GMFL & GW;
'Once again I remind you [of] the famous [initiation rites in the] Sacred Sancturies of the authenticityc Gnostic-Rosicrucians ([the] esotericists of the Middle Ages): when the neophyte was led to the center of the Lumisal, he was wearing [a] blindfold [over] his eyes. Somebody pulled off the blindfold & then the astonished & perplexed neophyte contemplated an unusual figure. There he was, before it's presence, the MALE GOAT of Mendez ([that] strange figure [of] the Devil).'

They have been refining energies for millennia, both within & without the human structure, obviously one term for one of those energies is 'Lucifer', the Kundalini of the ancient Vedas could also be identified with Lucifer;
'When you awaken your kundalini, which we now know is our central nervous systems, we let the chemical energy known as phosphorus, the light within us to be properly distributed through the central nervous system as it ascends up the spine to our brains. The very element of chemical energy that is crucial in mastering, because it is our inner Lucifer or Jesus. A force that can be used for good & light like Luke Skywalker in the movie Star Wars, or for bad & darkness like his father Darth Vadar.' (gnosticwarrior.com)
Incidentally, 'In Hebrew, the word for knowledge, or Gnosis, is Daath'
The Kundalini is 'awakened' by the processes of yoga, 'the most important Vedic deity associated with the kundalini is Agni & Surya. Agni is the kundalini energy, while Surya is not the kundalini per se, it is the kundalini in its triumph or full awakening. Surya is the kundalini having moved to the crown chakra. The source of all Shakti. This is often referenced as the sun being hidden & revealed in the Vedic journey. While some systems place more importance on the heart chakra than the crown chakra, this is not in conflict. In reality, the heart & crown chakra are connected via a nadi known as chitta nadi. This explains the strong association with the sun (Surya) with the head (crown chakra) & the heart (anahata chakra). Within numerous later yoga texts, we find references to the kundalini/Surya connection. Within the 'Hatha Yoga Pradipika', the kundalini is often described as having the brilliance of a thousand suns. We find teachings of the sacred Mount Meru within Hinduism. From a yogic perspective, the sacred Meru is represented physically by the spinal column. In a variety of ancient texts, Mount Meru is given a specific height, & located within an ocean, surrounded by seven islands. The seven islands reference the seven primary chakras, & Meru is the spinal column or the Sushumna of the astral body. Within the Shiva Samhita, the sun is referred to as being at the bottom of Meru & is a reference to the kundalini.'
The Chakras are stealthily depicted on the British passport, Mt Meru of the Hindus is identified with Mt Olympus & Mt Moriah, the supposed location of Solomons Temple & one of the 7 hills of Jerusalem. Moreover;
The topographic map shows that Mount Moriah is not a single peak, but an elongated ridge which commences to rise at its Southern end at the junction of the Kidron & Hinnom Valleys, at the original City of David, (elevation approximately 600 meters). The ridge then climbs in elevation to a maximum of 777 meters just Northeast of the present Damascus Gate of the Old City. The Temple Mount, prominent in most photos of Jerusalem occupies an area of about 45 acres. However the elevation of the bedrock outcropping on the Temple Mount within the Dome of the Rock Moslem shrine is only 741 meters.'

So we're back with Palestine & the Book of Revelations again, not only that, the number 777 incorporates the sacred '7 -7' formula for the resurrection of Osiris, 'Lord of the Underworld' & also the Aleister Crowley book; '777 & Other Qabbalistc Writngs', considered by Israel Regardie to be the definitive writing on the subject. I know the ancient Qabbalists or the Medieval Knights Templar would not have known about our metric system of measurement, however, it is worthy of note that the French implemented the metric system in the 1790's, immediately following the Rosicrucian orchestrated 'French Revolution', the introduction of the 'Egyptian Rite' of Freemasonry into Europe & all that went with it including the French invasion of Egypt & Palestine in 1798 under Napoleon….or perhaps it's all just another one of those flukes of history?
'Our knowledge of the topography of present-day Jerusalem is due to a careful survey of Israel by the Palestine Exploration Society in 1868-1881. Cisterns & sub-surface rooms under the Temple Mount were also more accessible then & were mapped by Sir Charles Warren.'

The Mysteries are resolved to destroying & ultimately uniting all religions under the banner of Paganism, wherein we are all one, everything is a part of god, there is no division, only union etc etc, where or how angels & demons fit into all this I'm still unsure & will be until I either find out exactly what they're talking about or experience one myself, for the time being I am of the persuasion that they are describing natural processes as opposed to supernatural, & for me it's all about Mysticism, Manly Hall in his Qabbala lecture, 'The Chariot of Righteousness', states; 'I would be quite certain, that the entire structure of the Qabbala, especially as it is given in the Sephir Zohar, is a veiled statement of yogic discipline.'
& I also think Aleister Crowley expounds upon this mystery quite succinctly in his & Samuel Mathers 1904 book;
'The Lesser Key of Solomon' (1904);
'Solomon promises us that we can (1) obtain information; (2) destroy our enemies; (3) understand the voices of nature; (4) obtain treasure; (5) heal diseases, etc.
I have taken these five powers at random; considerations of space forbid me to explain all.
(1) Brings up facts from sub-consciousness.
(2) Here we come to an interesting fact. It is curious to note the contrast between the noble means & the apparently vile ends of magical rituals. The latter are disguises for sublime truths. "To destroy our enemies" is to realize the illusion of duality, to excite compassion.
(Ah! Mr. [Arthur Edward] Waite, the world of Magic is a mirror, wherein who sees muck is muck.)
(3) A careful naturalist will understand much from the voices of the animals he has studied long. Even a child knows the difference of a cat's miauling & purring. The faculty may be greatly developed.
(4) Business capacity may be stimulated.
(5) Abnormal states of the body may be corrected, & the involved tissues brought back to tone, in obedience to currents started from the brain.
So for all other phenomena. There is no effect which is truly & necessarily miraculous.
Our Ceremonial Magic fines down, then, to a series of minute, though of course empirical, physiological experiments, & whoso, will carry them through intelligently need not fear the result.
I have all the health, & treasure, & logic, I need; I have no time to waste. "There is a lion in the way." For me these practices are useless; but for the benefit of others less fortunate I give them to the world, together with this explanation of, & apology for, them.
I trust that the explanation will enable many students who have hitherto, by a puerile objectivity in their view of the question, obtained no results, to succeed; that the apology may impress upon our scornful men of science that the study of the bacillus should give place to that
of the baculum, the little to the great--how great one only realizes when one identifies the wand with the Mahalingam, up which Brahma flew at the rate of 84,000 yojanas a second for 84,000 mahakalpas, down which Vishnu flew at the rate of 84,000 croces of yojanas a second for 84,000 crores of mahakalpas--yet neither reached an end.
