Sykes-Picot Agreement, also called Asia Minor Agreement, (May 9, 1916), secret convention made during World War 1 between Great Britain & France, with the assent of imperial Russia, for the dismemberment of the Ottoman Empire. The agreement led to the division of Turkish-held Syria, Iraq, Lebanon & Palestine into various French & British-administered areas. Negotiations were begun in November 1915, & the final agreement took its name from its negotiators, Sir Mark Sykes of Britain & François Georges-Picot of France. Its provisions were as follows: (1) Russia should acquire the Armenian provinces of Erzurum, Trebizond (Trabzon), Van, & Bitlis, with some Kurdish territory to the southeast; (2) France should acquire Lebanon & the Syrian littoral, Adana, Cilicia, & the hinterland adjacent to Russia’s share, that hinterland including Aintab, Urfa, Mardin, Diyarbakır, & Mosul; (3) Great Britain should acquire southern Mesopotamia, including Baghdad, & also the Mediterranean ports of Haifa & ʿAkko (Acre); (4) between the French & the British acquisitions there should be a confederation of Arab states or a single independent Arab state, divided into French & British spheres of influence; (5) Alexandretta (Iskenderun) should be a free port; & (6) Palestine, because of the holy places, should be under an international regime.

On this historic occasion, Allenby reportedly declared that "the wars of the crusades are now complete". Certainly, Allenby's statement introduces a critical epistemic connection between the modern British colonial project in Palestine & the Crusades of the 11-14th century. The then Prime Minister David Lloyd George described the capture of Jerusalem as "a Christmas present for the British people"; he had advised Allenby to take the city before the Holidays. Ending the Crusades Allenby's statement on the Crusades was not an isolated one, as illustrated by a number of British press & book publications from the period. For example, Punch ran a headline on December 19, 1917 declaring "the Last Crusade" with an illustration of "Richard Coeur de Lion looking down towards Jerusalem & nodding contentedly, 'My dream comes true!'"

It is possible that British security services may have been complicit in the flight, which was planned over lunch at Simpsons-in-the-Strand, where Douglas Jerrold, the extreme right-wing Editor of the Catholic English Review (& also a British intelligence officer), met with the journalist Luis Bolín, London correspondent of the ABC Newspaper & later Franco's senior press advisor. Actually, he went to Berlin to play the role of secret adviser to Hitler who was then at his beginning. It is probably this that had given rise to certain tales about the Golden Dawn, but in reality it was only about Crowley, because it does not seem that a certain English colonel named Etherton, who was then his “colleague”, had ever had the least relationship with that organisation. In February 1920 Winston Churchill wrote an article — rarely cited today — for the London Illustrated Sunday Herald entitled "Zionism Versus Bolshevism." In this' article Churchill concluded that it was "particularly important... that the National Jews in every country who are loyal to the land of their adoption should come forward on every occasion . . . & take a prominent part in every measure for combatting the Bolshevik conspiracy."
